Information on Commissions
General Information
I am primarily interested in writing music for performers, conductors, and ensembles that are excited about contemporary music. It's my philosophy that if people don't want to play your music, then people won't want to hear your music. I am also mainly interested in writing for instruments and ensembles that are somewhat new to the classical music world (like clarinet, saxophone, trombone, percussion, and wind ensemble). So, if you are interested in commissioning a new piece for yourself or your ensemble, please do not hesitate to contact me directly: James.David@colostate.edu
I'm very open to your ideas about possible instrumentations, duration, and even programmatic elements. My commissioning rates are flexible depending upon the situation of the performer. Non-monetary benefits such as recordings or performances at conferences can result in a greatly reduced commission. Also, I will always provide feedback, support, and input on the finished piece, including attending rehearsals and performances, participating in video conference rehearsals, and providing any necessary revisions to the score or parts.

Consortium Commissions
This type of commission has become my preferred method of working. It is mutually beneficial for all parties and, in my opinion, often results in a better final product. Consortium commissions can be for either large or small ensembles and even solo works. Typical rates for my consortium commissions are similar to the cost of buying a new set of score and parts of an existing work. However, members of the consortium will receive the added benefits of performance exclusivity (generally one year), significant interaction with the composer (including possible attendance at rehearsals and concerts), and the prestige of participating in a national or international consortium.
New consortium commissions will be announced periodically through this website and various other sources such as major professional music organizations. If you are interested in sponsoring a new consortium or participating in an existing project, please contact me directly at my email address listed above.
