"With Soul Serene" wins NBA Merrill Jones Composition Contest

1/8/2019

I am honored and thrilled to announce that With Soul Serene has won the 2018 National Band Association Merrill Jones Composition Contest!  This biennial competition is given to the most outstanding work for grade 3-4 concert band and is adjudicated by a distinguished jury of professional, university, and high school wind conductors. Thanks to Lee Newman (Norcross High School) and Rebecca Phillips (Colorado State University) for their support of this project!

We are still looking for Georgia bands to participate in the consortium for this piece so please check out the link if you're interested.

The irrepressible Dr. Karl Paulnack will be performing with the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble on October 15.  It was a singular thrill and honor to have him play my work at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention and I'm flattered that he'll be performing on his home turf with such a legendary band program.

Premiere by The Playground Ensemble

4/23/2016

Tonight is the premiere of my new work "The Deep Ones" for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion.  This piece was commissioned by The Playground Ensemble, the Rocky Mountain region's premiere new music ensemble.  If you're in Denver, come check it out!

Playground Ensemble Concert Tonight!

4/25/2015

I am honored to have my piece "Distrocto" for violin, clarinet, and piano on the ninth annual Colorado Composers Concert at the King Center for the Performing Arts in Denver this evening.  The Playground Ensemble, a professional new music ensemble from Denver and the Front Range, will perform the work.

This work was awarded the 2015 Colorado Composers Commission and I'm excited that I will have the chance to work with this group again next year on a brand new piece!  As part of the process, I have given lectures and private lessons this week at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music and Metro State University in Denver.

Thanks to Conrad Kehn for creating and sponsoring such an outstanding event!

Two premieres tonight

3/24/2015

My new chamber work "The Charm of Impossibilities" will be premiered tonight at St. John's Lutheran Church here in Fort Collins this evening at 7:30 PM.  This piece was commissioned by the Front Range Chamber Players for their 30th anniversary season and is inspired by Messiaen's "Quartour pour la fin du temps" which celebrates its 75th anniversary.

On the East coast, Linda Cionitti and Maila Guiterrez-Springfield will give the regional premiere of Historias y Danzas at Georgia Southern University.  Many thanks to their tremendous support of my music over the years!
