Program Notes:
"Partiels 2" for solo trombone and live electronics is inspired by both the highest and lowest forms of art. The title draws from a strange titling practice used by numerous low budget horror films of the 1970's and 80's. Hoping to capitalize on name recognition, many directors would use numbered titles (such as "Zombie 5") to connect with otherwise unrelated works. In my case, I am referencing Gerard Grisey's pioneering spectral composition which is loosely connected through the use of trombone as a sound source. Further, the solo trombone is manipulated through spectral means and exploits the use of natural overtones common to brass instruments. Like a typical hack screenwriter, I have played fast and loose with continuity, characters, and plotting to create a sequel that is satisfying in the way that only a cheap matinee can provide. This work was commissioned by Dr. Chris Van Hof for his 2016 Southwest recital tour.
